If I declare an attack, and my opponent activates 'Shadow Spell', and targets my attacking monster with its effect, is the current attack aborted? Or does the effect apply only to subsequent attacks with my monster?

Yeah, kind of. Negated would be the correct term.
So yes, it'll stop the attack.

That's all right. It cropped up at the weekend, when I declared the attack, and we did negate the attack - our line of reasoning was 'Wall of Illusion' that stresses the damage calculation does happen. But I did have afterthoughts though, and though I'd check up on it.
Most cards than negate things explicitly state it, but where attacks are concerned they don't. I guess it's just generally accepted as such.

Think of it in terms of spell speeds, an attack is a spell speed one actoin, a trap is spell speed 2, therefore before the battle ox has flopped his fist into the life points, hes been hit by sakuretsu armor, for example, dead.

chain knowledge fella, things happen in reverse order so....
1. you attack
2. He activates shadow spell
so in resolution
2. He activates shadow spell
1. shadow spell is active so you cant attack.

I had never viewed an attack as a chainable entity. But it all makes sense.
