The Road to the Nationals
Every year a duellist can take the tourney to the nationals if he or she so desires but how does one get to the nationals? This is what I wish to answer in this article. So let us begin with the joining the “road” to the nationals. Simple enough really all you need to do is find a way to get an invitation. You may only enter the nationals with an invite. There are several possible routes for you to get that invite which are:
• Be in the top 4 from the previous years nationals
• Win a city championship (or be high enough that the invite maybe passed down to you should the winner have one)
• Be in the top 4 of a regional (again be high as possible and you may get invite via pass down)
• Being a player who’s one of the 50 highest ranked in the UK without an invite.
• Other qualifying events(special events , last chance qualifiers , etc.)
So now that we have a way of getting that invite let’s look at each shall we.
1. Be in the top 4 from the previous years nationals. This is fair since they worked hard last year plus the champ should have the right to defend his/her crown. Not the easiest way of getting an invite but possible.
2. Win a city championship. This should be fairly straight forward as the winner gets the invite so all you need to do is win the tournament. There are lots of these around the UK giving many people opportunities qualify. These are fairly small with about 50 - 60 max on average.
3. Be in the top 4 of a regional. Similar to city championships but much bigger. The C-value is also higher meaning more points to gain (or lose) on your ranking. However the top 4 get invites so it kind of balances out. Turnout is high for these events can be up to 150 people in one tournament.
4. Being a player who’s one of the 50 highest ranked in the UK without an invite. This method is a little different. Instead of winning 1 tournament this method gives you an invite by your consistency and devotion to the game. I point out now YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE RANK 50 OR ABOVE to get the invite it is the 50 highest players without invites. This helps boost numbers at the nationals. Fairly difficult to get this invite since you need to attend lots of tournaments and be fairly good players consistently.
5. Other qualifying events. This method can be mixed difficulty. Some events can have age restrictions and others can be at difficult times. For example the last chance qualifiers give you a fair chance of entering the nationals. However they tend to be the day before the actual nationals which is cutting it a bit close in my opinion. However these event are often small so getting an invite is not always difficult.
Those are the ways to get an invite but what are the nationals like, what to expect and how to cope? Well ill try and answer this in my next article.
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL.
