Idealist or Realist
To start with let’s define what an idealist and realist is. An idealist can be defined as a person whose conduct or performance in influenced by ideas rather than practical considerations. A realist can be defined as some who is inclined to truth. In the Yu-gi-oh I believe there are both these types of duellists out there.
Let’s look at each type of duellist separately beginning with an idealist. In the game I suppose an idealist can be considered to be a player who looks for a strategy based around an idea, for example an idealist may base there deck around toons since toons can be quite powerful when used correctly in the right situations. Even in the middle of a duel sometimes an idealist may be waiting for the ideal time to use there strategy on the opponent to finish the game. This can lead to hesitation and therefore in fact may cost them the duel.
A realist on the other hand will be more inclined to do the opposite of the idealist. They will still base there strategy around a deck theme however there deck will be more ordered and their deck may tend to follow the main stream of the current Meta. As a result the creativity in there moves will be lacking as realistically the cards they put in there are normally used for the initial purpose of putting them in there (ie Cyber dragon is used as topdeck beatstick rather than for fusions).
So the next question I suppose would be who does better? Well this question can be answered by the type of tournament they enter. For example if both types of players entered the nationals it is more likely that the realist would win since he has spent time perfecting the strategy to deal with what may come up at the nationals. The idealist would potentially do worse since they are more likely to be attached to their strategy which may have worked at a lower level in the local area but at the nationals the types of deck are going to be much more varied.
However if the tournament is like it were at Gencon UK this year where you had to build a deck with different strategies to earn boosters the idealist maybe more likely to win since their deck is more likely to be unique therefore earning more boosters than a realist who just used there normal deck they would use.
In conclusion, it is fair to assume that both types of duellists exist in the duelling world around us. Each type has got there merits and the weaknesses but overall it is these differences in the game that give the game some variety otherwise the game would have been dead a long time ago.
Thanks
(PS. I’m probably an idealist and this article is my view)
