Another "quick" one:
Just to clear up something with a lad at the club, besides trap cards that specifically (my word of the day) state when they should be activated what conditions must be happening to use trap cards like solemn wishes and just desserts and jar of greed for example?
Is it ok to activate cards like this when your opponent either attacks, summons or plays a magic card?
I can print it off to show him what you all say so he hopefully knows without doubt!!
Cheers,
Ade.

You can activate a trap card at anytime you wish but you must have set it on your previous turn in order to activate it. Like if you set a trap then try to attack and try to activate the trap, then you can't do that. But if you have set it and then end your turn and your opponent trys to summon, activate, attack then you can activate your card. A annoying effect is to activate Lifeforce Sword when your opponent has sacrificed 2 monsters. He loses his two monsters and cannot resummon his monster until two ( or was it three? ) turns later.

Sorry but thats wrong, you cannot actiavte trap cards at any time, the timing of the card must always be correct, for example, bottom less trap hole must be activated when a monster is summoned, same with torrential tribute, certain cards can be played when ever you like, read the text and it will tell you i.e when your oppenent summons blah blah blah, when you opponent activates blah blah blah, you get my drift.

As everyone above has said traps such as jar of greed can be activated at anytime a move is made. You CAN'T activate a trap ramdomly during your opponents turn as it must be chained to something but otherwise anytime is good.
Also remember jinzo royal decree with stop them activating

That's what I said so thanks for clearing that up!!
So to wrap up:
You can activate a set trap anytime during your turn or your opponents turn UNLESS there are specific conditions that must be met first (of which will be stated on the card).
We all agree with this?

sort of yes, it has to be chained to something, but it can be chained to the change in phases, so you can chain to the draw phase, or, more importantly the end phase, especially good for dust tornado, as you destroy their face down and they dont have the opportunity to set another one.

So as I said, its all about the timing, effectively yes you can activate it but only when something happens whether it be a change in phase or a special summon etc.

Also remember jinzo royal decree with stop them activating just wanted to point out the last part was wrong, royal decree doesnt negate the activation of trap cards, it negates the effects. whereas jinzo does both
