When discarding cards from my hand, in response to 'Tribute to the Doomed' or during my end phase when I hold more than 6 cards, etc., are effects such as those described on Peten the Dark Clown or Night Assailant activated?
If indeed true, then i'm guessing that the same isn't true for ritual summons, as those monsters are tributes, and not discarded. Correct?

effects do happen with tribute to the doomed, but not with rituals, for the exact reasons you said

What about discarding to bring my card count down to 6? Do effects apply here as well?

i lie sorry mate, night assailants effect does happen with rituals, coz all it has to be done is sent to the graveyard

also peten is a wierd one, as the sending to the graveyard has to be the very last thing to happen for the effect to work, as it uses the word When and you can, at the start, making the effect opitional. confusing...hell yeah
par example
tribute to the doomed
lay tribute to the doomed
discard peten
destroy monster
so....... no effect
the only real way this will work is by battle.
